at phasebloom, we believe that trust is built by being honest about what we know and what we don't. this page is our annual review of the research landscape around seed cycling — not a collection of new findings we have generated ourselves, but a transparent summary of how the evidence base looks each year and how it is changing.
why we publish an annual review
seed cycling sits at an interesting point in nutrition science. it draws on decades of research into individual seeds and their nutrients, but it does not yet have a large body of research testing the practice as a whole. we think it's important to say that clearly, every year, rather than letting the picture blur over time.
what kind of research currently exists
most of the published research relevant to seed cycling falls into a few categories:
- laboratory and nutritional analyses of flaxseed, pumpkin seed, sesame seed and sunflower seed composition.
- small human studies looking at individual nutrients, such as lignans, healthy fats, zinc, magnesium, vitamin e and selenium.
- observational research connecting dietary patterns to menstrual health more broadly.
- reviews and summaries that bring together existing nutrient-level research.
this research gives us a reasonable biological rationale for why seed cycling might be worth trying, but it stops short of proving that rotating seeds through the menstrual cycle changes hormone levels or symptoms.
what is still missing
as far as we are aware, there are currently no large, randomised, controlled clinical trials that test seed cycling itself, as a complete practice, against a placebo or control group. we also aren't aware of published research that directly measures hormone levels before and after a period of seed cycling. until that kind of research exists, claims about seed cycling's effects on hormones should be treated as plausible but unproven.
how we approach this page
rather than inventing statistics or referencing studies that don't exist, we intend to update this page as genuine, credible, publicly available research on seed cycling and its component nutrients is published. where relevant new research emerges, we will describe what it found, who conducted it, and what its limitations are, so you can judge the evidence for yourself.
our commitment
we won't claim more certainty than the science currently supports. if a year passes with little meaningful new research, we will say so rather than manufacturing a review to fill the space. our goal is simply to help you make an informed decision, grounded in what is actually known.
